Early Winters – 4th of July

Early Winters

Song: 4th of July
Cover Artist: Early Winters
Album (Year): 4th of July (2011)
Original Artist: X

Today’s post was way tougher than it needed to be. Not counting the more traditional patriotic US Independence Day songs, there are plenty of songs about the 4th of July out there. The problem is that nobody has covered any of them. Before I went searching, I would have placed money that SOMEONE had to have covered at least U2’s ‘4th of July’. I found that Evanescence has done a live cover of Soundgarden’s ‘4th of July’, but I try to stay away from live covers (especially if they have never been recorded to an album).

Then came the band Early Winters to the rescue. Posted to their website as a free download just three days ago (it’s still there as of this writing, link below) it’s a cover of my favorite Independence Day song ever, ‘4th of July’ by seminal L.A. punk band X. I saw X perform this song at an outdoor festival on the Fourth of July and it was defiantly one of the highlights of my musical life.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day – A Collection of Irish Covers

Shamrock

Song: Various Irish Traditional Songs
Cover Artist: Various Alternative, Metal & Punk Artists
Original Artist: Traditional

HAPPY SAINT PATRICK’S DAY!!

Every song today is a cover of a traditional Irish tune, therefore I can’t very well link to the originals. So we’ll make up for that in quantity. If you aren’t feeling a little more Irish after listening to these tracks, well then there’s not much I can do for you.

Moby – That’s When I Reach For My Revolver

Animal Rights

Song: That’s When I Reach For My Revolver
Cover Artist: Moby
Album (Year): Animal Rights (1996)
Original Artist: Mission of Burma

I was never a huge Moby fan, having only heard his electronic work, and I’d never listened to Mission of Burma. The first time I heard this cover however, I loved it, and was quite shocked when I discovered that it was Moby and covering a punk/noise rock artist no less. This is a perfect example of a cover song that actually managed to turn me on to two separate artists at the same time. I love both versions of this song by the way.

Mission of Burma recorded this track for their 1981 debut EP ‘Signals, Calls and Marches’, and it has remained one of their most popular songs ever since. Moby, disillusioned with the Electronic music scene decided to release a punk album, 1996’s ‘Animal Rights’. While the album completely failed both critically and commercially and almost killed his music career, it spawned the almost perfect cover heard below. I bought the CD immediately, even if none of his fans did.

Minor Threat – Steppin’ Stone

In My Eyes EP

Song: Steppin’ Stone
Cover Artist: Minor Threat
Album (Year): In My Eyes EP (1981)
Original Artist: Paul Revere & The Raiders

If you’ve read my ‘Welcome’ post or ‘About Me’ page you know that Minor Threat holds a special place in my heart, so today you’re getting the first of the three covers Minor Threat did during their way too short career. This isn’t your mid-90’s pop-punk band. This is raw, distorted bliss.

Steppin’ Stone was originally recorded in 1966 by Paul Revere & The Raiders for their album ‘Midnight Ride’ and is a great Rock n’ Roll song. It became an even bigger hit later that same year for The Monkees after being released as the B-Side to their hit I’m A Believer. It’s theme of not being put down makes it the perfect song for the anti-establishment attitude of early 80’s punk, and Minor Threat gives it that perfect punk treatment.

Down By Law – 500 Miles

punkrockacademyfightsong

Song: 500 Miles
Cover Artist: Down By Law
Album (Year): punkrockacademyfightsong (1994)
Original Artist: The Proclaimers

This cover is always a hit at parties I’ve DJed, and is usually one of the first songs requested if any repeat party-goers are in attendance. Usually by the chorus everyone is singing (shouting?) along. It’s just an amazingly fun cover.

Released originally by The Proclaimers in 1988 it became a hit in the UK, but never caught on in the US until it appeared on the soundtrack to Benny & Joon in 1993. Down By Law drops this right in the middle of their 1994 album punkrockacademyfightsong amidst a bunch of other equally fun and raucous punk rock songs.
