Soft Cell – Tainted Love

Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret

Song:Tainted Love
Cover Artist:Soft Cell
Album (Year):Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret (1981)
Original Artist:Gloria Jones

Sorry, for not posting anything for a while. Between my main computer giving up the ghost and my daughter being born I’ve not been in the position to dedicate time to music so much as I’d like. To make up for that, today I’m posting a song that probably 99% of you believe to be an original.

‘Tainted Love’ is one of those one-hit wonder songs of the early 80’s that was such a huge hit that it has since been sampled extensively, used in commercials, television and movies, and added to almost every 80’s new wave compilation ever made. However, before it was a 1981 career highlight hit for UK synthpop band Soft Cell, it was a buried B-side to a failed 1965 single by soul artist Gloria Jones.

Your mind, It is blown.

System of a Down – The Metro

Song: The Metro
Cover Artist: System of a Down
Album (Year): Dracula 2000 Soundtrack (2000)
Original Artist: Berlin

Today you get ‘The Metro’ by 80’s new wave band Berlin. This song epitomises the new wave, synth heavy sound and almost defines the genre all by itself.

While System of a Down has gained all sorts of popularity in the past ten years. This song on the Dracula 2000 soundtrack (and later on the Not Another Teen Movie soundtrack) predated all their popularity and hinted at things to come from the band.

Billy Idol – Mony Mony

Don't Stop ep

Song: Mony Mony
Cover Artist: Billy Idol
Album (Year): Don’t Stop ep (1981)
Original Artist: Tommy James & the Shondells

Here’s another of those that a lot of people don’t realize is a cover. Tommy James & the Shondells originally recorded this back in 1968 as the title track of their 5th album. Trivia Bit: The title comes from the big red MONY printed at the top of the Mutual of New York building, which Tommy James saw while struggling for a title for the song.

Billy Idol first covered this on his 1981 debut ep ‘Don’t Stop’, but it wasn’t until he released a live version of it in 1987 while promoting his remix album ‘Vital Idol’ that the track took off and became one of his signature songs.

Anthrax – Got The Time

Persistence of Time

Song: Got The Time
Cover Artist: Anthrax
Album (Year): Persistence of Time (1990)
Original Artist: Joe Jackson

My wife is by no means a fan of Thrash Metal, but Anthrax’s version of this Joe Jackson tune has to be on her iPod, and she likes it even better than the original, which is pretty rockin’ in its own right.

‘Got the Time’ originally appeared on Joe Jackson’s 1979 debut album ‘Look Sharp!’ Anthrax covered the song for their fifth studio album ‘Persistence of Time’ and their breakneck pace to the song guarantees that it will drive itself securely into your brain. One listen and ‘Got the Time’ will be Tick Tick Ticking in your head too.
