Black Crowes – Hard To Handle

$hake Your Money Maker

Song: Hard To Handle
Cover Artist: Black Crowes
Album (Year): $hake Your Money Maker (1989)
Original Artist: Otis Redding

Here’s one in the “Many people don’t realize this is a cover” category. As with most songs that have this problem the song was only a minor hit for the original artist, but was a huge hit for the band that covered it.

Hard To Handle was originally recorded by Otis Redding and released in 1968 after his death. It is largely overlooked next to the King of Soul’s many other hits. However, when the Black Crowes put their southern rock spin on it for their 1989 debut album the song took off and went straight up the Billboard charts.

I second that comment. Great song and I had no idea that it was a cover. Never heard the original….until now.

I’m sure this won’t be the first. There are so many songs out there that people think are originals. Even I am sometimes shocked when I discover a song that I thought was by one band was originally by someone else.
This is part of the point of this blog though, allowing people to hear the original version of cover songs. That’s why I post both the cover and the original for you to listen to.
